“The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit. In the procreation and education of children it reflects the Father’s work of creation. It is called to partake of the prayer and sacrifice of Christ. Daily prayer and the reading of the Word of God strengthen it in charity. The Christian family has an evangelizing and missionary task” (Catechism of the Catholic Church), 2205.
We at St. Mary take seriously our responsibility as a parish to form children and youth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to prepare engaged couples for Christian marriage, and to foster the development of healthy and strong marriages and families. All of these efforts help contribute to the building of what Saint Pope John Paul II has called the “culture of life” and a “civilization of love.” We welcome you to join us in this cornerstone work of Christian discipleship.
Liturgy of the Word—designed for children from 3 years old through third grade—is scheduled during the 10:00 am Mass on Sunday from September through May. These children are dismissed from Mass at the Penitential Rite and proceed to the atrium where they read and listen to scripture readings guided by trained adults who direct the program. The children return to Mass during the Offertory Procession and often show their artwork reflecting their lesson to Father O’Connor.
This program—designed for children from 3 years old through third grade— is held in the atrium at St. Mary Basilica from 4:00 to 5:15 pm on Wednesdays. This program is grounded in the scriptures and in Church liturgy and it uses Montessori principles of learning.
